The Romanian word fulg ‘snow-flake, fluff, down, feather, flock’ most probably is an autochtonous expressive formation of onomatopoeic origin: *fl̥g-, related to a fufula (reg.) ‘to snow’, a fâlfâi ‘to flutter, to fly, to float’, cfr. Alb. flug ‘swing’, OGerm. flug ‘flying’, Norse (dial.) flugsa ‘snow-flake’. II. The antiquated and regional Romanian word stâlpuri ‘branches’ is inherited from Vulg. Lat. (dim. pl.) *stirpulae, derivative of Lat. stirps ‘(3.) branch’, cfr. Lat. stipula ‘stalk’.
