Abstract: | This article discusses some aspects regarding the grammaticalization of the disjunctive conjunction fie, on a limited corpus consisting on writings ranging from the 16th century to the 20th century. The disjunctive conjunction fie originates from a conjunctive verbal form, which has acquired new semantic and syntactic features. In most of the contexts, fie has a concessive-disjunctive value and, only in a few situations, it has a clear disjunctive value. There also exists a strong between fie and irrealis markers; thus, the disjunctive conjunction fie can be the result of a grammaticalization process of some irrealis constructions. |
