Abstract: | This article makes a contribution towards the hodonyms (i.e. proper name of streets, alleys, avenues, boulevards, squares, places and the like to be applied) in the province of Frosinone. All of the collected names have been split according to a semantics fields taxonomy, that a specific classification: anthroponyms, writers, poets, artists, scientists; hagionyms; commemorative origins as well as significant dates; relevant fascism and anti-fascism figures’ names, key actors in post-war Italy; names of regions, boroughs, provincial chief towns, states, nations, continents, rivers and lakes; there are also names referred to old times jobs and activities, those referring to communications and the like as well as to plants, animals, water and mountains. Among the many existing types of denomination (present 44 times indeed) is “Street”, well ahead of all the others, followed by „District”, „Square”, „Alleyway”, „Resort”, „Avenue”, etc. Further to a type-like examination approach, we may come to the conclusion that besides the significant and widespread use of names referring to commemorations and symbols, the great majority of names is represented by names connected to descriptive and common use locations. The present report highlights and introduces us to the etymology of quite a few local names places. |
