Abstract:
[From the history of commercial proper names (hypermarkets, supermarkets, retail companies)]
As economic and commercial activities are diversifying globally, the onomastics of the commercial domain becomes a growing linguistic sector. The names of hypermarkets, supermarkets and retail companies have acquired international character and a history often connected with the founders’ names. As proper names, they can start from common words, symbolic or ludic words, which had a certain significance for those who created them (either to evoke events, dear, respectable persons, etc., or out of the wish to be as convincing as possible). In their case, the compounding process is very productive. Many compounds have a heterogeneous structure, or represent various combinations with ellipsis, metathesis, etc. Most of them entered Romanian from languages of international use (French, English, German, Italian). Through circulation and high degree of use, especially in the oral language, they have occupied a special and well-represented place in the sphere of commercial onomastics.
