Abstract: | The present paper aims to outline the essential differences between the translation functions involved in nation building processes, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, the translation processes occurring in multi-ethnic empires. Towards this end, the study will use the categories defined by Michaela Wolf in relation to the Habsburg Empireand apply them to the Russian Empire, and will compare national developments in Germany and Romania. At first sight – though this is where more extensive research is needed – it becomes apparent that those empires that have to deal with plurilingualism within their borders and have to find pragmatic solutions for manipulating this plurilingualism in order to ensure their internal stability are also more liberal insofar as imports from outside the borders are concerned. |
