Abstract:
This squib describes the properties of the understudied modal variant of angórə/ancora as it is used in the dialect/regional Italian of Bari, Puglia. On a par with Italian and other Romance varieties, Barese angórə/ancora can be used as a temporal adverb with the meaning of „already/still/yet‟. However, this adverb has evidently undergone a further semantic change in Barese and other few upper-southern Italo-Romance varieties, and is now used a clause-initial modal particle, paraphrasable as „It may be the case that (p)‟. In particular, this modal expression presupposes that the event in (p) has not occurred yet, but it may; moreover, it implies the speaker-oriented wish for the event in (p) not to take place.
