Abstract: | [On the notion of grammar in the act of naming: The case of South African speakers giving names of French origin to commercial places] This study considers the hypothesis that owners, when naming their business using linguistic elements borrowed from a foreign language, do not specifically bother to apply the rules of the grammar of the language from which they borrow these cultural elements, for example: a shop named Petit Home Décor; a pet animal beauty parlour La Petite Doggie & Cat Parlour; or a café La Verte Café. The only intention is to enhance their attractiveness to their potential clients. It will be shown that this sociological phenomenon does neither offend the owners nor the customers of these businesses whose names can also be considered to be microtoponyms. These are located in South Africa, a country for which we are studying the entire onomastic domain. For the purpose of demonstration, a large number of examples will be provided with reference to the fields of grammar, word spelling, pronunciation, accentuation and punctuation. |
