Abstract: | [A Moderate Formalism. The Bucharest Circle of Poetics and Stylistics] The present study analyzes the structuralist project developed in the first part of the 60s by Romanian linguists, ethnologists, stylisticians and critics gathered within the Bucharest Circle of Poetics and Stylistics, led by Al. Rosetti, Mihai Pop and Tudor Vianu. Our exploration is conducted with two basic goals. On the one hand, we try to situate this academic group against the cultural-ideological background of transition from the then-dying realist socialism to the not-yet born aesthetic autonomy, which enables us to read this local type of structuralism as an escape from ideology. On the other hand, we intend to assess the legitimately critical perspectives of this assembly of disciplines (linguistics, ethnology, stylistics), by dwelling upon the formation years of certain members of the Circle (Virgil Nemoianu, Toma Pavel, Sorin Alexandrescu), who would later become prestigious international critical personalities. |
