Abstract: | The linguistic study sheds a new light upon the field of terminology in general and, particularly, on the physics and chemistry terminology of the XIXth century. This article covers the study of : the level of « scientificity » in relation with the type of division of the domain into sub-domains; the linguistic – extra-linguistic relation in the conceptual development of the sciences and the modernisation of the terminology throughout the definitional metalanguage. The corroboration of lexicographic information with the textual information reveals, among other things, the combination at work between the conceptual content and the terminological form in one field of study. Physics and chemistry both present a strong appetency for interdisciplinarity. We notice the use of « semanticized » suffixation as a method specific for the construction of chemical terms. |
