The paper tries to identify the strategies used by the Wallachian translator of Septuagint (Ms. 45) in order to elude the pervading ‘literalism’ of the biblical translation in the pre-modern age. The use of synonyms and the pia interpretatio principle, as observed in the first two books of Kings (Ms. 45 version), indicate two key aspects of the freedom of the biblical translator.
